Hello! My Name is Chloe Cooper

Hey Chloe! Who are you when you are not dreaming up amazing designs?

I often refer to myself as a serial generalist, as I have dabbled in so many industries and have so many interests. I can’t sit still and I need to be constantly learning something new. I have a few degrees – music, fashion design, journalism and (soon!) graphic design.

I’ve also worked in a wide range of industries from film & TV post production to e-commerce. I’ve just had my thirtieth birthday and I’m about to get married. There are exciting things ahead and so many things I still want to do! I believe that knowledge is the most important thing, and I aim to be a lifelong learner.

What or who inspired you to be a designer?

I’ve always had an interest in design and have a keen sense of colour and placement. I worked in e-commerce in London for a number of years, running websites for luxury fashion brands, and was jealous of all the interesting things the web and graphic designers were doing. So I decided to take the plunge and learn graphic design myself.

What are you up to in the design world at the moment?

I just submitted my final portfolio! I feel very elated and ready to take on the next challenge – finding a job.

What is your favourite part of designing?

My favourite part of designing is when you get that spark of an idea, and you just know that it’s going to work. I love deciding on the perfect colour combinations and seeing all the pieces fall into place.

Do you feel you have a Niche or would like one? If so what would it be?

I feel like there is still so much I need to learn and as such I don’t have a niche yet, but I do really enjoy designing invitations. I just designed my wedding invitations and a matching website to go with it. The feedback from my friends and family was so positive that I think it could be an area worth exploring.

Tell us anything you would like to about your featured works.

I had the idea for Wildwood Floral Design after reading a children’s book titled “Wildwood”. The cover has a beautiful watercolour illustration and I was inspired to create something that evoked a similar sense of mystery and beauty. There was a lot of trial and error, but I am very happy with the end result.

The idea for Ritual came to me as I was about to fall asleep one night. I guess the nightly “ritual” coupled with the scent of geraniums from my moisturiser triggered something within my brain. I knew right away that it was the idea I’d been waiting for and got straight out of bed to write it all down, just in case I had forgotten by morning.

What do you love about studying design?

The best part about studying anything, including design, is being forced into situations that you would usually avoid. For example, I would never have thought to attempt a packaging design system, but through the assessment set, I forced myself to work through the steps and ended up with something I’m very proud of. To me, this is one of the most rewarding things about studying – getting the opportunity to surprise yourself.

What’s your dream design job? Don’t hold back!

To be honest, I have no idea! I think I would love to be a freelancer or to have my own little business. I know what I’m like as a worker, and I work best by myself and by setting my own hours. We shall see what the future brings!
